Dr. Chuck Downing Grants and Awards “Demonstration of Scholarship” award from Great Oak High School as part of the Wolfpack SPIRIT ceremony. Lighthouse Award winner for outstanding service to the Education Department. Point Loma Nazarene University. First prize winner, Short Fiction Contest from Writer’s Journal. Story titled: Fair Game. California Winner of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching - Secondary Science - NSF and the White House. With the $7500 grant from this award, he installed closed-circuit television with broadcast capability in science rooms at Monte Vista High. $18,000 TAAP grant for local staff development from California Eisenhower - Funds through the California State University Chancellor's Office. With this money and significant community assistance, Monte Vista established a self-sustaining pond, the Monarch Marsh," for student use in the science program at Monte Vista High Fellow for Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Program - Project: "Development of a series of "textettes" for integrated/coordinated high school science classes." In this project, he wrote and desktop published a significant portion of the text books used by the coordinated science students at Monte Vista State Finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Science Teaching – California Department of Education. Outstanding Secondary Science Teacher - San Diego Science Educators Association Summer fellowship from the American Society of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry to work in a rDNA lab. CIBA-GEIGY Exemplary High School Teaching Award from the National Science Teachers Association California Teacher Instructional Improvement Program Grant from GUHSD - Developed a series of Critical Thinking Exercises, a Study Guide for AP Biology, and Learning Games for Biology Golden Apple Award Winner - twice (Monte Vista High School) "Teacher of the Year" for San Diego County - San Diego County Department of Education
